PHYSICIAN COMMENTS ABOUT LAUREN JORDAN:

Barbara Coulter-Smith, DO Women’s Integrated Health, Grapevine, Texas

“As gynecologists, we see a lot of decreased libido and there really isn’t great treatment except for counseling. I think your book is great because it touches on all the topics that cause decreased libido that we don’t have time to get into (and sometimes patients don’t want to hear – they want to take a pill). This is a resource we can refer patients to. I also appreciate you because good sex therapists are few and far between.”

Guy Culpepper, MD Bent Tree Family Physicians, Dallas, TX

“Your writing style is warm and easy to understand. Your expertise is clear and I am very impressed with your insight. Our patients can certainly benefit from your efforts on this far too common complaint.”

William Richard Salter, MD Advanced ObGyn Associates Garland, TX

“I finished your book last night, and was REALLY impressed.”

Services

Lauren Jordan, LCSW, CST works with men on many sexual concerns including:

  • Early Ejaculation
  • Erectile Dysfunction
  • Delayed or Absent Ejaculation
  • Low Sexual Desire
  • Desire Discrepancies between partners
  • Sex Addiction
  • Fetishes & Alternative Sexualities
  • Sexual Trauma
  • Intimacy & Sexual Communication

One important distinction between couples therapy and sex therapy is that couples therapy done by general marital therapists is far less focused on sex.

Marriage and Family Therapists have excellent training in general couples therapy, but often have extremely little training in sex therapy techniques and human sexuality. Usually, a general couples therapist will approach a couple’s sexual problem by working to improve the issues that may interfere with the couples’ sexual life indirectly, such as poor communication, or lack of conflict resolution skills. Research shows this is simply not enough in most cases, to restore a woman’s desire, or improve a man’s early ejaculation.

I have heard from clients who saw general marital therapists in an attempt to solve a sexual problem say that their therapist blushed when they brought up the sexual issue. Obviously, if your therapist is embarrassed to talk about it, she won’t be able to help you.

For a full post on the importance of seeing a sex therapist for a sexual problem, see

I Wish We Had Seen a Sex Therapist.

In Sex Therapy, we talk about your concerns.  Sexual activity is NEVER a part of your actual therapy session.  I will give you and your spouse exercises to do at home, which we will talk about in your sessions.  Any therapist who engages in any form of sexual activity in session (or with clients at any time) is breaking a fundamental ethical rule.  I will help you understand more about your sexual functioning and feelings, and help move you to a better relationship with sex and  your sexuality.  I may also provide information about anatomy, sexual response, and healthy sexual functioning.

Sex Therapy is a very specialized field, which requires considerable training.  Many therapists say they work with sexual issues, but not all have adequate training to provide effective sex therapy.  I have earned full certification as a Certified Sex Therapist from the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT), after working towards this for many years.  The training includes education about sexual functioning, sex therapy techniques, and supervision by another Certified Sex Therapist.  I am very proud to have earned this credential, and to be a member of AASECT.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Sex Therapy for Men

1. How does talking about sex help me with my sexual problems?

First, talking about sex with me helps you get more comfortable talking about sex with your partner. It is a way to practice what many think “should” be natural, but doesn’t feel quite that way. Many of my clients tell me that no one talked about sex in their families when they were growing up. Not talking about it can convey a message: sex is dirty.

Second, you may have unrealistic ideas about sex or just plain misconceptions that you are not aware of. Through talking with me, these things can come to light. Think of it as very personalized sex education – where you can ask ANY question without fear of being judged.  I can often give you very specific tools which can help you leave your sexual problems behind.

2. I’m afraid of hurting my partner’s feelings if I express some of my sexual needs. Could you help me with this?

Many people shy away from speaking directly to their partners in order to keep from hurting their feelings. I can help you get very clear about what you are wanting and needing from your partner, and then help you practice saying it. And of course we will work together to choose your words carefully. Most people would prefer to know what works well for their partner and what doesn’t. Couples need to think of this type of communication as “learning each other” – they can’t just know what their partner wants without some input.

3. How can I determine whether my problem is physical or emotional?

With any sexual issue, I would recommend that you get a full physical to rule out physical causes. Don’t forget to ask if any medications that you are taking could be responsible for your sexual difficulty. That said, there is ALWAYS some emotional piece to a sexual problem. Ignoring the emotional piece can waste time and energy that could have been spent remedying the problem.

4. What if I’m just not sure that your workshop, or groups or individual sessions are for me?

I would be happy to see you for a consultation. That way, you can get a sense of how I work, and feel more comfortable making the decision to work with me. Wouldn’t you love to feel free of the guilt you are carrying around as you avoid sex? Wouldn’t you like to fully enjoy your lovemaking with your husband? This is what i do for my clients – I help them get to this point where sex is not “an issue” but is a natural and satisfying way of connecting to your partner.

5. I don’t know if I can convince my wife to come to see you, though I am willing. What other options are there besides sex therapy?

If your spouse is reluctant to address her low desire, you may want to check out my eBook No Room For Sex: How To Boost Your Low Libido.

You can read it first, since you are the more interested party, then ask her at a quiet time if she will read it as well. Be calm and gentle with her, but let her know this is important for your marriage. There are exercises she can do, which you can then discuss. If you prefer the self-help route, try the many suggestions in the book – you may not think that you need a session with me after you’ve done this!

If you do not have a libido issue, consider coming in alone first.  It may be that we can resolve the problem with just individual work.

What are your fees?

    • $180 -45 minutes
    • $240 – 60 minutes
    • $360 – 90 minutes
